2024 SSMCP Business Survey

The 2024 SSMCP Business Survey was conducted to gauge how South Sound business leaders and community members view the impact of Joint Base Lewis McChord (JBLM) on respondents and to determine whether and how those views have changed since the last survey was conducted in 2019.

This survey had a 594-respondent sample. The target audience included community members and Pierce and Thurston County business leaders.

Some of the top insights from this survey include:

    • Most respondents have had some affiliation with JBLM.
    • Survey respondents rate JBLM favorably, giving it 4.2 out of 5 stars.
    • JBLM is believed to help attract talent to the region. 70% of respondents did not live in Pierce or Thurston County before their military affiliation.
    • When service members come, they tend to stay – 76% self-report as homeowners.
    • The majority of respondents continue to expend most of their purchasing power in the South Sound.
    • More respondents own homes today than in 2019.
    • The majority of respondents were not able to quantify JBLM’s economic impact.

2019-2020 SSMCP Local Business Survey

SSMCP in collaboration with UW Tacoma, Center for Business Analytics, recently completed an on-line local business survey. This survey sought to identify the military connected customer bases of local businesses and the effects of JBLM on the local economy.  Over 560 responses were received with 53% of those coming from local business leaders.  64% of respondents were independently owned small businesses and 71% of the businesses had been operating for over 10 years. The questions focused on perceptions in preparation for the updated 2020 JBLM regional economic impact analysis.
Two key findings are shown in the chart below. Business leaders tended to report lower perceived economic impact than non-business leaders.  Business leaders who did not report a current or prior military affiliation reported lower perceived impact than military affiliated business leaders.  Given this finding, SSMCP has to improve on its strategic messaging regarding the economic significance of JBLM to the South Sound.  WE hope to be doing just that later this spring when we conclude our updated economic impact analysis of JBLM.

Secondly, the survey confirms that JBLM helps attract talent to the region– 75% of respondents did not live in Pierce/Thurston Counties prior to their military affiliation.  And, when the come, they tend to stay – 70% self-report as homeowners.
